My mom was a floral designer before she retired. As a child I always had fun rummaging around the studio looking for flowers and items to hot glue together. Now that I’m an adult, it’s pretty much the same. Now I look for objects with interesting textures.

I printed these after a summer trip to the capital city of Oaxaca around the time of the Guelaguetza. They are all 11 “ x 14 “ and have an earthy and visceral feel. The local area of Oaxaca is known for its wool textiles (tapete) production and many tallers let you visit their shop to learn about the entire process.

I specifically made the Sorbet Series for my show in Punta de Mita this summer. The Sorbet Series are fun, sunset colored squares, gilded with gold and silver leaf. Also included in the Sorbet Series are two 16” x 20” prints and two 20” x 30”.

Traditional fairy tales are part of the folktale genre and were designed to teach children morals and values. Many of them have themes about compassion, bravery, good versus evil, and how love can conquer all. When I was a child I loved all folktales and fairy tales and to this day I still see the world in those terms. Some of my favorites were Thumbelina, Sleeping Beauty, and Gwinna. I still believe that compassion, bravery, and love can turn into magic and change our world for the better.

I made this mini series in the summer of 2021 at our home studio in Los Gatos. Both my parents love gardening and plants and have an interesting and vibrant collection of orchids around the yard. Orchids have an innate exotic femininity to them and they represent strength, beauty, and grace.

The Bay of Banderas is known for its ecological diversity, beautiful shorelines, and rich cultural history. When the Spanish first arrived, they named it Bahia de Banderas because the native people gathered all across the Sierra Madre mountains with their ribbons and emblems which looked like flags waving in the wind to the extranjeros. Banderas, of course, means flags and so the bay became the Bay of Flags.

When I was younger my mother gave me a book called The Language of Flowers. I loved that different plants held their own symbology. It was like their own magical language and meaning. Lady Slippers have a rich spiritual history with many different tribes and cultures around the world. One bit of lore says that if you find a Lady Slipper along your path that you will find more clarity in your higher purpose. Since Lady Slippers are also part of the Orchid family, they represent beauty, sexuality, elegance, and spirituality.

When I work on a collection, I start with a color palette and then I experiment and explore. I like to use different tools to bring out shadows and textures such as sponges, brushes, mesh, cut-outs, and organic material.
The entire printmaking process for me is one big self expression exercise.

Patchwork represents a lot of my individual pieces that don’t belong to a series. Some of them are my older pieces and others I decided to put here to add to this quilt-like collection. There are some with gold leaf aplique, rainbow roll-ups, figures, and black and whites.

Chine-Colle is a printmaking process in which the image is transferred onto another paper which is anchored onto the main paper. It allows printmakers to use more delicate and fibrous papers like Japanese lace papers to add detail and texture to the print.
My dad taught me this process and I instantly fell in love with it because it allows you to add depth and unique textures to the print.
The print “Father Time and the Pillars of Creation,” I made in 2021. It is my most recent Chine-Colle and largest. The Hubble Space Telescope captured a photo of gas in the Eagle Nebula in 1995 and became one of the most iconic photos of space. It was only after I made this print and stared at it for a while that I thought about that picture. It must have been tucked away in the back of my mind. Exploring the inner subconscious is one of my favorite aspects of abstract monotype printmaking.
